Improvements in soil classification have gone hand in hand with advancements in our knowledge of the soil system. However, the theories underlying the categories and the objectives for which they were developed have evolved over time. Early empirical soil surveys, traditional soil classifications, and the scientific theory of pedology are the three primary sources from which the classification of soils was derived. In terms of evolution, there are three basic categories for soil classification techniques: ancient, early/pre-modern, and contemporary. They fall into three categories based on their geographic reach: local/national, regional, and international.
