Description

The genetic components of trees and other woody plants, referred to as "forest genetic resources," are heritable. The adaptive capability that has allowed trees to be one of the most successful organisms on the planet in terms of evolution is supported by forest genetic resources. Since each member of a sexually reproducing species has a distinct genetic makeup, it is not the goal of genetic conservation to preserve every genetic variation (or "genotype"). Instead, maintaining the evolutionary potential of species will ensure the survival and efficiency of the mechanisms that create and preserve genetic variety. The preservation of certain qualities (characteristics) of trees and other woody plants, such as resilience to pests, diseases, or drought, may also be the focus of conservation efforts. Through careful planning and coordinating efforts at the national, local, and ecoregional levels, forest management for protective and productive objectives may and should be compatible with conservation. For forests to continue to be productive and for forest ecosystems to remain healthy and vibrant, as well as to continue to play their protective, environmental, and cultural roles, forest biological diversity, including forest genetic resources, must be conserved. Forest trees and other woody plants provide food and shelter for various other creatures and have evolved sophisticated genetic diversity-preserving systems. Inter- and intraspecific genetic diversity have several critically important functions. It enables trees and shrubs to respond to environmental changes caused by pests, diseases, and climatic change. It offers the foundation for upcoming evolution, selection, and human breeding for various settings and functions. Additionally, it supports human values related to beauty, ethics, and religion on various levels. Selected papers by esteemed professors, academicians, researchers, and scientists from India and overseas related to various topics and aspects of forest resources and their conservation and management are included in the book Conservation and Management of Forest Genetic Resources. Researchers, general readers, and policymakers are anticipated to gain something from this book regarding policy implications.
