Introduction to Genetically Modified Foods

Genetically modified foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, through the introduction of a gene from a different organism. The technology is often called “modern biotechnology”. Most existing genetically modified crops have been developed to improve yield through the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance of herbicides. The term “ Genetic Modified Organism(GMO)” has become a controversial topic as its benefit for both food producers and consumers are companied by potential biomedical risks and environmental side effects. The book introduce some recent technological developments in GM foods and their impact in the field and also provides up-to-date knowledge about the benefits and potential problems of GM food.
