Education is a process of socialization. Together with other social forces it plays an important role in shaping the structure of society. Through education society imparts its knowledge, skill, values and behavioural patterns to its younger generations. Our education system also socializes us to our society. We learn cultural expectations and norms, which are reinforced by our teachers, our textbooks, and our classmates. The process like the community from whom the teachers come and the communities from whom the students can go a long way in influencing the curriculum contents and the outcome of learning. There are four philosophical perspectives currently used in educational settings: essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, and social reconstructionism /critical pedagogy.
