Description

Medical and Veterinary Microbiology is the study of the agents responsible for causing human or animal infections: bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. This includes the study of underlying mechanisms of pathogen virulence, diagnostics and identification of pathogens, pathogen epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance. In IGH we study infectious agents in both humans and animals of economic importance. Considering the close similarity among microorganisms causing diseases in humans and animals, many laboratory techniques that have been developed for the identification and detection, subtyping and phylogenetic analysis, virulence determination, and drug resistance assessment of human pathogens, have been thus readily adopted for the investigation of animal pathogens, or vice versa. The aims of this book “Veterinary Medical Microbiology” is to provide the overview on transmission routes and behaviour of pathogens during infections and use this knowledge to design better therapeutic strategies or vaccines in order to improve the health of humans and animals.
